Where It Hurts Isn't Always Where Healing Begins – Insights from Dr. Spencer Baron on Connected Healing

Father Leo in dialogue with Dr. Spencer Baron

“Where someone feels pain isn't always where the real problem begins. Healing starts when we learn to see the whole person.”

What if the pain you're trying to fix isn't actually where healing needs to begin?

In the first episode of a two part series LFA Purpose Podcast, Father Leo welcomes renowned chiropractor Dr. Spencer Baron for a conversation that goes far beyond sports medicine. Together, they explore how healing requires more than treating symptoms—it requires understanding the connections that often go unseen.

For more than four decades, Dr. Baron has dedicated his life to helping people recover, perform, and live healthier lives. As the longtime Team Chiropractic Physician for the Miami Dolphins and a trusted healthcare provider for professional athletes across the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NHL, and collegiate sports, he has learned one lesson that continues to shape his work:

The place that hurts isn't always where healing begins.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

One of the most memorable stories from the conversation involves a Major League Baseball pitcher who sought treatment for persistent elbow pain. After years of treatment and imaging, the discomfort continued and his performance declined.

Instead of focusing only on the elbow, Dr. Baron examined the athlete's movement from the ground up. He discovered limited mobility in the player's big toe—the very point responsible for generating power during every pitch. That restriction had gradually altered the mechanics of his entire body, placing unnecessary stress on his elbow.

By treating the underlying cause rather than the obvious symptom, the athlete regained his performance and extended his professional career.

It was a powerful reminder that effective healing begins by understanding how every part of the body works together.

Healing Is Both Science and Art

Throughout the episode, Dr. Baron describes chiropractic care as a profession built on three foundations: science, philosophy, and art.

Technical knowledge provides the foundation, but experience teaches something equally important—the ability to observe, listen, and understand each person's unique story. For Dr. Baron, healing isn't simply about applying techniques. It's about seeing the person beyond the injury.

That philosophy is reflected in one of the lessons he shares with every intern he mentors:

"Big eyes. Big ears. Small mouth."

Observe carefully. Listen deeply. Ask thoughtful questions before offering answers.

Trust Is Part of the Healing Process

Dr. Baron's journey into professional sports wasn't driven by the pursuit of recognition. Instead, he focused on earning the trust of athletic trainers, physicians, coaches, and patients. Over time, those relationships opened doors that allowed him to help elevate chiropractic care within professional athletics.

Father Leo reflects that trust is at the heart of every meaningful relationship between a healthcare professional and the person seeking care. People don't simply want someone who understands medicine—they want someone who understands them.

Healing begins when people feel seen, heard, and genuinely cared for.

The Body Teaches Us Something About Life

As the conversation unfolds, Father Leo expands Dr. Baron's clinical insights into a broader reflection about life itself.

Just as pain in one part of the body may originate somewhere else, many of life's struggles have deeper roots than we first recognize. Stress, relationships, work, and personal challenges are often connected in ways we don't immediately see.

Understanding those connections requires patience, humility, and the willingness to look beyond surface-level answers.

That's where lasting healing—and lasting growth—begins.

A Conversation About Connected Healing

At LFA Purpose, we believe that meaningful transformation begins with self-awareness. Whether we're pursuing physical healing, personal growth, or greater purpose, lasting change comes when we understand the deeper connections shaping our lives.

Dr. Spencer Baron's story reminds us that the most important questions aren't always, "Where does it hurt?" but rather, "What is this pain trying to reveal?"

Take a Moment to Reflect

  • Are you focusing on the symptom instead of the source?
  • What areas of your life might be more connected than you realize?
  • Who truly listens before offering advice—and how can you become that person for others?
  • What might change if you looked beyond what is obvious?

Sometimes the greatest breakthroughs don't come from treating what's visible—they come from discovering what has been there all along.
