What If the Pain Isn't the Problem? How Dr. Spencer Baron Learned That Healing Begins With Listening

"It dawned on me after listening."

— Dr. Spencer Baron

What if the pain someone describes is never the whole story?

In this episode of the LFA Purpose Podcast, Father Leo continues his conversation with Dr. Spencer Baron, exploring an idea that reaches far beyond the treatment room: healing rarely begins with a solution. It begins with someone willing to listen.

Dr. Baron was a pioneer in bringing chiropractic medicine into professional football, serving as the team chiropractic physician for the Miami Dolphins for nineteen seasons and treating elite athletes with the Miami Marlins, the Florida Panthers, and Major League Baseball organizations including the New York Mets, the San Francisco Giants, and the Colorado Rockies. Nearly forty years into practice, now based in Weston, he has learned that the body rarely tells the whole story on its own.

In this episode Dr. Baron reveals:

  • Why listening, not diagnosis, is the first real step toward healing
  • How a patient's back pain revealed something no scan could show
  • The two forces that drive every decision: moving away from pain, or toward pleasure
  • Why lasting healing requires the body, the mind, and daily habits to be treated as one

One story from the conversation stays with you. A patient came in with straightforward low back pain. Two weeks of standard treatment produced no change. It was not until Dr. Baron noticed something she had mentioned only in passing, something about her marriage, that he understood what was actually happening. The pain was real. It was also not the whole story.

"It dawned on me after listening," he says.

In a culture built for quick fixes, that idea runs against the grain. Most of us want the fast answer, whether the question is about our health, our career, or our sense of direction. Dr. Baron's experience suggests something slower and more honest: the presenting problem is rarely the real one, and finding the real one takes patience.

At LFA Purpose, we believe self-awareness works the same way. Real alignment, whether in health, work, or purpose, tends to begin with the willingness to listen a little longer before trying to fix anything.

Sometimes the most important diagnosis is not what is wrong. It is what has never been fully heard.
