Beyond Addiction: Finding What Lasts
A Journey Inward Toward Faith, Freedom, and Purpose
What happens when the things we turn to for comfort no longer bring us peace?
Sometimes, we look for relief in places that offer immediate satisfaction but leave deeper questions unanswered. We distract ourselves from difficult emotions, seek acceptance from others, or hold tightly to things we believe we can control.
But what happens when we begin looking inward instead?
In the second episode of LFAPurpose's conversation with Glenn Wojtusiak and Father Leo, the discussion moves beyond addiction and the decision to get sober. It explores what comes next: rediscovering self-worth, finding strength through faith, learning to surrender, and discovering purpose through helping others.
Glenn's experience with addiction and recovery reveals something deeply human. Lasting change is not always just about letting go of what harms us. It can also be about discovering what truly sustains us.
The Search for Something That Makes Us Feel Whole
Growing up, Glenn was surrounded by alcohol. Drinking was normalized in his family, and from an early age, it became a familiar part of life.
But beneath those experiences was something more personal.
Glenn recalls struggling to fit in during his younger years. He wasn't part of the popular crowd, and like many people searching for acceptance, he wanted to feel noticed.
He shares a memory from a teenage birthday party when an embarrassing incident became the talk of his school. Rather than feeling ashamed, he remembers feeling important because people were finally talking about him.
For a moment, that attention made him feel like somebody.
It's a revealing moment in his story because it speaks to something many people experience, even outside addiction: the desire to feel worthy, accepted, and enough.
When we don't recognize our own value, we may begin looking for it in other people, achievements, relationships, or behaviors that temporarily make us feel better.
For Glenn, alcohol offered an immediate escape from uncomfortable emotions.
Yet the relief was temporary.
As Glenn and Father Leo discuss, the temptation to seek quick comfort is not limited to alcohol. Modern life offers countless distractions that can keep us from examining what we're feeling.
The deeper question becomes: Are we addressing what we truly need, or simply finding ways to avoid what hurts?
Glenn's story reminds us that understanding our behaviors often begins with understanding ourselves.
